Who We Are

HUI is a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization that seeks to provide physically handicapped individuals and their families access to appropriate information, products, services, and employment opportunities. The ultimate aim of HUI is to improve quality of life for the physically impaired and assist them in achieving their maximum level of productivity as well as the highest degree of physical and economic independence possible.

According to the Census Bureau, in 2006, there were 51.2 million people with some level of disability. They represented 18 percent of the population. There were 11.8 million people between the ages of 16 and 64 who were unable to find work because of medical conditions. The median income for people with a non-severe disability was $22,000 compared to $25,000 for those with no disability and $12,000 for people with a severe disability.

Disability status has a large impact on earnings, welfare, and family life. Just 13 percent of individuals with a severe disability work full time. Data substantiate the obvious, i.e., that persons with a disability, particularly a severe one, have a considerably lower earning potential than those without one.
